A Grade II* Listed Building in Victoria, Newport

George Street Bridge, Newport, South Wales

Uploader's Comments

The opening of the George Street Bridge, Newport, in April 1964, brought immense relief to South Wales from the very long delays and congestion in the then town, now city, of Newport caused by a lack of suitable crossing points of the river Usk. Prior to this, the only other available crossings places were at Caerleon, the Newport Transporter Bridge and the nearby Town Bridge . All were unable to cope with the traffic volumes even then. The Town Bridge carried the A48, a major artery into and out of South Wales. Since 1964 it has been 'quickly followed' by two further river crossings, the M4 in 1967 and the City Bridge. opened in 2004.
