History

The main range is probably early C19. To the L is a lower unit, now kitchen, with chamfered spine beam; this may be C18 and all that is left of an earlier house. The complex is shown on the Tithe map of 1840.

Exterior

Long 2-storey 3-window range constructed of white-washed rubble stone under a slate roof with rendered end stacks. The openings are offset very slightly to the R and have stone lintels and sills. Central entrance containing a boarded door and plain overlight, with hornless 12-pane sash window to R. Double horned sash window to L, each sash with 12 panes. To the far L is a small 4-pane fire-window. The upper storey has 16-pane hornless sash windows beneath the eaves, aligned with those below. Adjoining the N end is the lower unit, now kitchen, of one-and-a half storeys. It is also of whitewashed rubble stone under a slate roof with large rendered end stack. Door to R and small-pane casement to L, both C20 with rendered lintels. Above the latter is a 2-light C20 casement beneath the eaves. The rear of the main range has irregularly-placed 2-light wooden casements, 3 to the upper storey and 2 below, that to the R with a segmental brick head. The lower unit has a C20 window to each storey. A boundary wall continues to the R.

Adjoining the S end of the house is a long farm range of random stone on boulder footings under a slate roof, which runs at a slight angle to the house. It is not lime-washed. The openings have been altered: wide full-height doorway to centre, L of which is a hatch with planked door. Further wide opening to L end with planked double doors, probably inserted. To the R of the central entrance are 2 single doorways, that to R with split doors, and with a very small light between. The loft has a central gabled dormer, now boarded over.

Interior

The main range was not seen. The lower kitchen unit to the L has a fireplace to end wall, partly infilled, with long timber lintel, and the ceiling has a spine beam with shallow chamfer and plain joists.

The farm range is 4-bay and open to the roof; tie beam trusses containing some re-used timbers, including part of a cruck blade; concrete floor. Stable to R end.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as a range which includes a farmhouse retaining particularly good vernacular character, and with evidence for earlier origins. Group value with farm range to S.
