History

Part of the early C19 development at Buckland, relating to the C18 country house, the stableyard including this stable block, wall, coachouse and stable wing all appearing as at present on the Tithe map of 1841.

Exterior

The stable block faces the stable wing of the coachouse on the other side of the stable yard and together they flank, asymmetrically, the N entrance to the yard. Of coursed rubble with tooled stone dressings, hipped Welsh slate roof with overhanging eaves. Openings have cambered heads and voussoirs: 3 multipane hoppers to front, end doorways with stable doors and hopper overlights, boarded loft opening. Similar hoppers to sides; to right stone steps to dormered loft entrance with 6 panelled door. Rear wall forms part of the stable court wall, of rubble with pyramidal coping and extending at eaves height to form the W boundary wall, curving SW to form an entrance gateway of rockfaced stone. This has double basket arches, each with voussoirs, with metal fittings for the former gates. Courtyard paved and cobbled under later concrete with some channelled stones and two circular stone rick stands.

Interior

Some stall fittings survive; currently used for storage.
