History

Probably C18 origin substantially altered and enlarged C19 by 2 cross wings and new frontage. Appears L shaped on tithe map 1841. In C19 owned by the Crawshay family.

Exterior

A medium-sized country house, an early Gothic Revival remodelling of a Georgian house; double pile plan. Of rendered and colourwashed stone with Welsh slate roof; dressed stone ridge stacks with cornices, axial stack to rear. Main frontage of 5 bays each with a gabled roof, overhanging eaves with decorative bargeboards, the 3 to the centre, representing the remodelling of the earlier core, narrower, and the two outer projecting. Central range has 2/2 pane horned sashes to first floor and deep cross-framed windows to ground floor either side of a steep pitched gabled porch with decorative bargeboards and arched doorway; side bays to the cross wings have cross-framed windows to both floors, 3 light above and 4 light to ground floor. Side elevation facing drive has similar central gable. Rear elevation shows the building history with the central section retaining 6/6, 8/8, pane sashes some renewed and a 9 pane hopper.

Interior

Interior remodelled, retains some 6 panelled doors with moulded surrounds, some shutters, some later boarded dado panelling.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as a prominently sited C18 / C19 country house with an interesting building history comparable to that of the nearby Old Rectory.

Group value with the Church of St Ffraed and its listed churchyard monuments.
