History

Built in 1848 as a National School, serving the parishes of Henllan, Llanfair Orllwyn and Bangor Teifi. Architect, Charles Davies of Cenarth. Late C19 alterations and additions. Converted to a private house after 1976.

Exterior

Schoolhouse with T-shaped school to rear. Rubble construction with slate roofs, timber eaves and Barges. The bargeboards to the N gable and the three front dormer windows have carved scrollwork and pendant finals. Octagonal rubble chimney stacks to gables of house, brick gable stack to rear schoolroom . Two storey 3-bay front to house. Later timber cross-windows to ground floor with stone voussoirs and hood-moulds. Similar upper glazing with stone lintels under gabled dormers. Slate sills. Boarded central door with decorative 4-pane overlight, cambered stone voussoired head. N end with projecting gabled frame constructed of slate slabs. Plain S end.

Single storey 5-bay S elevation to rear schoolroom, remodelled in late C19. Penultimate 4-pane windows with cambered stone voussoired heads: the other 3 windows are taller, with 6 panes and rise to dormers with overhanging half-hipped roofs: stone lintels. Slate sills

N side with projecting schoolroom to centre, having two timber 4-light transom and mullion windows to N, each light with 4 panes. Slate sills and stone lintels. Two light 12-pane windows to E, similar to W: cambered stone voussoired heads. Porch to left in angle with house having boarded door to E and 6-pane window to E, the latter with head as above. Outshut porch to right, built against rear schoolroom having 3-light 18-pane window. to N with stone lintel and slate sill. Boarded door to W with 4-pane overlight and cambered stone voussoired head. Dormer window above to rear schoolroom with hipped roof and 3-light 18-pane window. Latter rubble extension to W end.

Interior

Rear schoolroom with late C19 kingpost-type roof and dividing glazed timber screen.

Reasons for Listing

Listed as well preserved former National school in attractive village setting.
