Description

Possibly later 18th century with substantial later 19th century addition to front; later additions and alterations. 2-storey farmhouse, 3-bay to front, recessed at centre with single storey pavilions flanking original house at rear (taller to right); single storey ancillary structure and porch to rear. Squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone to front; cream ashlar dressings (droved in part); harl-pointed rubble sandstone to sides and rear (rendered side to SW elevation). Narrow quoin strips; droved quoins; droved long and short surrounds to openings; ashlar margins to entrance wing; sandstone mullions; projecting cills throughout.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: central bay recessed with steps to timber panelled door at ground; 2-pane fanlight; narrow sidelights; single window at 1st floor. Piended bays advanced to left and right with corniced tripartite windows projecting at ground (narrow sidelights); single windows aligned at 1st floor. Single storey, single bay pavilions recessed to outer left and right.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: entrance wing with single windows at both floors off-set to right of centre. 2-bay original (?) house recessed to left with single storey pavilion adjoined at ground; single windows in both bays above.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: original house with stained stair window off-set to left of centre; small window below. Bipartite windows at ground in flanking bays; single window at 1st floor in bay to left; small window at 1st floor off-set to right. Part-glazed timber door in single storey pavilion recessed to outer right. Pavilion to outer left with projecting flat-roofed porch to right; mono-pitched ancillary structure to left.

Predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows; some plate glass at rear. Purple-grey slate pitched and piended roofs; stone coped skews in part. Iron rainwater goods. Corniced wallhead stacks to SW (brick) and NE (sandstone) entrance range; brick apex stack at rear; various circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

Statement of Interest

Bartlehill may originally have been a simple 3-bay farmhouse, subsequently doubled in size by the full-width entrance range to the front. This range retains much of its original detailing - the corniced tripartites and recessed entrance being particularly notable. Rutherfurd notes a Thomas Penny as farmer here in 1866.
