Description

Mid 19th century. Single span (over Blackadder Water) wrought-iron girder bridge (although on map as suspension bridge) with lattice parapet with stugged ashlar piers with polished ashlar dressings; rusticated quoins to abulments; coped dies; curved wing walls; timber boarded route.

Statement of Interest

The Allanbank estate was succeeded by the Houstons in 1836 and became the dower house in the 1840s. It must have been at the time of the amalgamation of the Blackadder and Allanbank estates that this bridge was built. It lies to the N of Blackadder House's site and to the SW of Allanbank House's site. Blackadder House was demolished in 1925 and Allanbank House was demolished in 1969. The bridge managed to survive the flood 1947 which destroyed the other bridge upstream which has been subsequently replaced by another iron girder bridge.
