Earlier 19th century, redeveloped by Aitken & Turnbull of Hawick, late 20th century. 3-storey, 3-bay terraced tenement with pilastered shopfront at ground floor, set on sloping site. Painted ashlar to shopfront; squared, snecked whinstone to upper storeys, with yellow sandstone ashlar dressings; harled to rear. Deep base course; corniced shopfront with fascia; eaves course. Raised quoin strips. Regular fenestration to front, with raised ashlar margins and projecting cills; irregular fenestration to rear. Deeply recessed door with large flanking windows to shopfront, with blind opening to outer left.
Plate glass shop windows; predominantly 12-pane glazing in timber sash-and-case windows elsewhere. Grey slate roof. Coped, rendered stack with circular clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
B-Group comprises Nos 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 19, 2, 4, 6, 10 and 12 Howegate - see separate list entries. Interest here lies both in the traditional character of the buildings and in the irregular street which they make up - its curved form being of particular note since it is said to follow the medieval building line.
Comprehensive redevelopment of Howegate from 1978 onwards by Aitken Turnbull resulted in two Civic Trust Awards (1982 and 1986), as well as a Borders Regional Council Award for Conservation (1986). The blind opening to the left of the shopfront was presumably originally a door to the close (which is now entered from the rear): the Ordnance Survey Town Plan of 1857 shows a step at this point, and another by the shop door.
