Description

Circa 1740 wings with circa 1800 centre block. 2-storey
H-plan house over raised basement. Harled with tooled and
polished ashlar margins and dressings.
Centre door with Roman Doric doorpiece approached by shallow
splayed steps over-sailing raised basement; simple cast-
iron balustrade to steps. Double-leaf panelled door;
fanlight with ogee tracery; centre 1st floor tripartite (with
narrow side lights) linked to flanking windows by cillband.
Further bandcourse encircles house below raised ground floor
windows. To rear centre bay is slightly advanced with deep
projecting full-height bowed bay with tripartites in each
floor. Various additions project at raised basement level 12-
pane glazing; cornice and blocking course; piended platform
slate roof with paired centre stacks; single centre stacks
to similar roof at wings.
Interior; small entrance lobby leads to stairhall (left) from
which rises cantilevered stair with slender decorative cast-
iron balusters with polished wooden handrail.
Dining room with inlaid marble chimney-piece and decorative
ceiling cornice. 1st floor drawing room taking up full width
of centre block with Doric columned screen and carved white
marble chimney-piece.
Simple moulded door architraves with either fielded panelled
(c. 1740) or beaded panelled doors. (c. 1800).

Statement of Interest

Mansion burnt after 1745 rebellion. Wings appear to have

survived.
