TANWORTH-IN-ARDEN

Gate lodge to Umberslade Hall (qv). Late C19. Probably by WH
Bidlake for Muntz family. Stucco on buff brick with parapeted
lead roofs. Late Classical style. Triumphal-arch in plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic room in centre. A tall 6/12
sash window either side of central arch has moulded eared and
shouldered architrave. Moulded ribbon and laurel leaf swags
above. Torus-moulded plinth and channel-jointed vermiculated
quoins.
A giant Roman Doric pilaster either side of arch supports a
moulded entablature which continues around the lodge and, in
centre, a section of moulded parapet with volutes at either
end.
Similar facade to rear. Within arch are two 6-panel doors
either side with tooled eared architraves and a pilaster
between. Buff brick semi-circular vaulted soffit over.
To each return at upper stage are two 6/6 sashes in tooled
eared and shouldered architraves with sills.
INTERIOR: plain and simple.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: fine wrought-iron gate to south side of
arch has dog-bars surmounted by panel with scroll motif and
bars, shaped crest surmounted by swan.
