Watermill. Probably late C18, extended in early C19. Red and blue brick with
dentilled eaves cornice to roof, uncovered at time of inspection (May, 1986).
2½ storeys with second floor openings only in gable ends. Irregular fenestration
of 3 windows on first floor and 3 on ground floor, to north, that to right on
ground floor blocked. Doorway on first floor to left with C20 cast-iron staircase
leading up to it. Doorway to left of righthand window on ground floor. All
openings boarded up at time of inspection. Single-storey extension to east.
Waterwheel hidden by corrugated-iron construction at west end. Thought to be of
pitchback type, about 16 foot diameter by 3 foot wide (difficult to see at time of
inspection). Interior: Machinery complete, including the wooden axle of the water-
wheel carrying an iron pit-wheel. Iron wallower and spurwheels, mounted on wooden
upright shaft (much charred); crown wheel directly over the spur wheel. Sack
hoist drum mounted over. Formerly two pairs of stones, one having fallen because of
the fire, the other in place on the stone floor. The building was badly damaged by
fire in the late 1970's or early 1980's.
