Description

HERTFORD

TL3313 THE NEW RIVER, THE KING'S MEAD
817-1/6/352 New River Co. property markers in OS
field 44

II

Property markers. c1837-56, New River Company. Cast-iron. Two
types; 'double plate', with arched head, projecting rim, cast
raised lettering on face, 'NRC' (New River Company), 2 fixed,
at angle, in ground; 'milestone', slightly tapered with curved
top, raised cast lettering 'NRC' (New River Company) on one
side, fixed in ground.
(i) 'Double plate' at NGR TL 3393 1361
(ii) 'Double plate' at NGR TL 3393 1355
(iii) 'Milestone' at NGR TL 3388 1371
The new cut to the Lee on the King's Meads was made c1837,
although the Gauge House (qv) was not built until 1856. The
property markers appear to date from that period. They do not
appear to be set out to a definite pattern.
