House, now public house with manager's flat above, 2
structures now occupied as single building. Front c1700, rear
mid/late C16, both altered C19 and C20. Stuccoed brick front
with Welsh slated roof over modillioned eaves cornice.
EXTERIOR: 4-bay front elevation of front range, both 2 storeys
and attics. First floor front elevation with 4 slightly
recessed 12-pane sash windows in architrave surrounds, first
floor plat band. Ground floor with 2 doorways in first and
third bay, with sash window between, modern half glazed doors
and double leaf doors on diagonal at right (east) corner with
Brewhouse Lane. East flank elevation has 1 sash window ground
and first floors.
Rear range has double jettied overhang, with small window set
high in attic gable, which overhangs first floor which has 12
pane Yorkshire sash window at left; ground floor with small
sash at left, central closed 8 pane window and door at right
with timber bracket to jetty above.
To roof, 2 box casement dormers. Rear timber-framed and
plastered with old tiled roof and long plastered and brown
brick chimneystacks.
INTERIOR: ground floor bar area opened out, central C19 bar
counters, rear wall has large fireplace with roll and cavetto
moulded timber bressumer, which now forms doorway to rear
wing, 2 steps lower. The position of the fireplace is not
characteristic of C18 plans, but the adjoining properties to
the west Nos 36 & 38 (qv) have a similar arrangement, and
likewise have a C18 front. Upper floors and roof not
inspected.
