Large block of offices and shops flanking and above the Piccadilly Arcade through
to Jermyn Street. c1908 by Thrale Jell. Portland stone, slate roof. Mannered
classical details. 5 main storeys and 2 tiers of dormers to steep roof. 5 bays.
Ground floor, incorporating mezzanine, has central entrance to Arcade and mid C20
shop windows defined by original framework of pilasters and entablature. Upper
floors have window bays articulated by giant piers to entablature over 4th floor;
the central 3 bays with superimposed canted oriels up to 4th floor where the
windows are deeply recessed to form an Ionic columned loggia. Attics above outer
bays. The lower range of dormers have arched heads. Prominent party stacks.
Ornamental iron balcony across 1st floor on modillion corbels, iron balconettes
to 2nd and 3rd floor windows of outer bays, iron railing to 4th floor loggia.
The Arcade, paved in black and white tiles, is lined by shop fronts each with
central entrance flanked by plate glass convex bowed windows; shallow barrel vaulted
ceiling with 2 glazed saucer dormers. Jermyn Street facade of 5 storeys, 5 bays
with similar but simplified composition to Piccadilly front; narrow metal canted
oriels through 1st to 3rd floors and a tall sheer attic.
