Farmhouse. Late C16 with later additions and alterations. Timber
framed with painted brick infill and additions; plain tile roof. L-plan
with gable projecting to right. 2 storeys and gable-lit attic. Framing:
mainly close studding with middle rail and curving tension braces.
Gable of cross-wing jettied to first floor and attic (underbuilt in
brick to ground floor) with moulded bressumer to first floor; first
floor has 3 tiers of square panels with quatrefoil decoration flanking
central area of close studding with position of 6-light mullioned and
transomed window above; twisted corner shafts and carved brackets supporting
attic jetty; right side also has twisted shafts and herringbone decoration,
which is also present to rear, flanking position of 4-light mullion
window below tie beam; painted decoration above tie beam. Irregular
fenestration, late C19 and C20 casements, 2 on first floor of hall
range with one below to left; C20 bay window to ground floor of cross-
wing and small window to attic; C19 mullioned and transomed window
to first floor on left side. Entrance to far right of hall range in
angle with cross-wing, C20 panelled door in plain C19 doorcase. Cross-
wing has red brick ridge stack with triple rebated shafts of star section
at junction with hall range; this has painted brick external end stack
to left with top rebuilt in late C20 brown brick. C19 painted brick
lean-tos to right side of cross-wing and to rear and left gable end
of hall range. Timber framed gabled dormer in roof slope of hall range
to rear. Interior: deep-chamfered ceiling beams throughout to ground-
and first-floor rooms with dragon beams for first-floor jetty to front
room of cross-wing. Back room has C17 rectangular oak panelling and
inset wall cupboards with H-hinges. Fragment of timber frame with
segmental-headed doorway exposed to first floor of cross-wing and oak
winder staircase (replaced by C19 staircase between ground and first
floors) continues to attic. Cross-wing has double-purlin roof in 3
short bays with collar and tie beam trusses and straight windbraces;
similar roof in 2 wide bays to hall range. B.O.E., p.65.
