Description

CROSBY

SJ3198SW BEACH LAWN
778-1/6/17 (North East side)
No.16

GV II

House. Probably c1860-80; altered. Painted brick with some
painted stone dressings, slate roof. Free Gothic style.
Double-depth single-fronted plan with back extension.
EXTERIOR: two-and-a-half storeys, 1:1 windows, in 2 very
unequal portions: the principal portion has a canted bay
window at ground floor with a parapet which has Tudor-arched
pseudo machicolation; a Tudor-arched 3-light casement at 1st
floor; and a slightly set-back 2nd floor with corner
pinnacles, and a gable half-dormer with offsets and coped
gable with finial, containing a round-headed window. To the
right is a narrow set-back bay treated as a turret, with a
segmental-pointed doorway at ground floor. A small
Tudor-arched window at 1st floor, and a splayed top floor with
two small one-light windows and machicolated parapet.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
With No.17 attached to the left (qv), one of a pair of small
houses in fanciful Gothic style, forming an interesting foil
to the larger Italianate houses to the right (Nos 1-15 consec
qv).
All the listed buildings in Beach Lawn, together with those in
Adelaide Terrace, Bath Street, Marine Crescent and Marine
Terrace, form a group in the Waterloo Conservation Area of
Crosby.
