Cottage. C17 with possible earlier origins. Timber-framed and
rendered with formerly plain tile and slate roofs, now largely
stripped of cladding; tall red-brick stack behind ridgeline
and smaller stump of stack towards western end. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey and one-storey-and-attic. The long north
elevation is of ashlared render with roof gabled to east and
half-hipped to west. One-storey with attic; 2-window range. 2
gabled dormers, 2 blocked door openings, 2 blocked sash window
openings and a small, low, lean-to extension. The east end of
this range has a lower part of rendered brickwork.
To the south of this is a later range, at right-angles, and of
2 storeys with a hipped roof. The east elevation of this range
has one blocked window on 1st floor, 2 blocked windows on
ground floor, 2 shallow lean-tos and a truncated stack. The
south elevation has a pair of blocked windows on 1st floor
over a wide, shallow, blocked window on ground floor. The west
elevation of this range has metal C20 casements on each floor
and a central hipped plain tile porch. Small truncated red
brick stack in centre of ridgeline.
The south elevation of the main range has one blocked window
and remains of large, low, lean-to extension. The short west
elevation here, has a blocked window on each floor.
INTERIOR: the oldest part is the eastern end of the
one-storey-and-attic range, which is of A-frame type and
incorporates late C16 or early C17 timber, possibly reused,
with a partition including adorsed arch braces. The tall stack
has remnants of an inglenook fireplace.
HISTORY: thought to be the premises of a C17 salt master.
