Description

MALDON

TL8407SE HIGH STREET
574-1/6/51 (North West side)
24/09/71 No.7

GV II

Shops with flat over. C17 and early C19. Timber-framed with
painted-brick Flemish-bond front with 2 parallel plain tile
roofs at right-angles to front. The roofs have hipped fronts
behind a plain parapet and have rendered gables to the rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 4-window range. 2nd floor has 2 square
sash windows, recessed under brick arched heads and with both
a central vertical and margin glazing bars. 1st floor has 2
wide and 2 narrower sash windows of similar detail. Ground
floor has 2 plate-glass C20 shop windows and 2 plain glazed
C20 entrance doors. Rear has central 2nd floor opening with
blind render panel.
INTERIOR: very interesting quality timber-frame of 1st half of
C17 with many innovative features of a 'box frame' approach.
Major members are chamfered with lambs-tongue stops with
additional pair of diamond indentation. Top plate to
north-west 1st-floor room is heavily moulded and front corners
of 1st floor have internal wall braces to corner posts. 2
lateral spine beams arranged in recessed assembly seems to
frame former stack bay (stack removed at last renovation). The
twin roofs have curved collars, side purlins and reused late
medieval rafters. A linked roof gives access between A-framed
attics and may be original feature.
