05/08/76 Alder Hill Cottages, Nos 1, 2 and 3

Farmhouse, now 3 cottages. Early C17 with C18 and C20
alterations. Coursed gritstone rubble, stone slate roofs.
2 storeys, the main range, Nos 2 & 3, is 4 windows wide with a
continuous outshut to rear; gabled wing projects on left, with
entrance to No.3 in lean-to on left return, opening into a
rear wing which is roofed parallel to the main range. Quoins.
Main range: openings altered, two C20 glazed doors centre with
plain lintels, enlarged windows retain recessed chamfered
surrounds; 1st floor: a 3-light side sliding sash left, C20
windows centre and right, added bay with round windows far
right. Stone gutter brackets, gable copings, corniced stack
far left and to ridge right.
Projecting wing on left: C20 windows, gable rebuilt, C17
moulded coping, shaped kneelers and finials retained.
Entrance to No.3 set back on left return: a re-cut and reset
lintel with keystone inscribed 'A(nn)o D(omin)i' and the date
'16...35'; a weathered ram's head terminal set above the
keystone, jamb stones project slightly; to right a half
round-arched window. The rear wing has a C17 gable (facing the
road) with blocked 1st-floor window and shaped kneelers, gable
coping and finials; a large rebuilt ashlar corniced ridge
stack.
INTERIOR: reputed to retain C18 stairs with moulded rail,
string and turned balusters, fireplace with large cambered
arch, chamfered ceiling beams, early carved stone head set
into wall in entrance hall.
