Parish church. Dated 1937. By J Amory Teather. Random rubble
with ashlar dressings and gabled and hipped plain tile roofs.
Romanesque Revival style.
PLAN: apsidal chancel, side chapel, organ chamber and vestry,
nave with clerestory, aisles, transepts, south-west tower,
north-west and south-west porches.
EXTERIOR: windows are mainly round-arched.
Apsidal chancel has 4 windows. North-east side chapel has 2
windows to north and east. Organ chamber to south, 2 storeys,
has massive external side wall stack and single window.
Adjoining vestry has double hipped roof, and to south, a
round-arched doorway. To west, a recessed flat-headed doorway
flanked to right by 2 small flat-headed windows.
4 bay nave has on either side 3 pairs of clerestory windows
set in slight projections. West end has a graduated triple
window. 3 bay aisles have 3 triple shouldered windows.
Transepts have a pair of very tall windows.
Rectangular tower, 2 stages, has panelled north and south
sides and stepped parapet. Small slit windows on west side.
Recessed bell stage has a round-arched double bell opening to
north and south and smaller single openings to east and west.
Gabled north-west porch has Romanesque doorway with double
shafts and plain inner arch with double door and fanlight.
South-west porch has splayed flat-headed opening with concrete
lintel and flat-headed doors.
INTERIOR has plain round arches and rendered walls throughout.
Chancel has canted panelled ceiling. Shouldered piscina under
south-east window. South side has tall recess with roundel
above and 2 smaller recesses with window and shouldered door
below. To west, organ opening. To north, 2 tall openings to
side chapel.
Nave has shallow pitched wagon roof with braces on corbels. 3
bay arcades with square piers, and clerestory windows on
sillband, with single blank to west. In the west bay,
round-arched doorways to north and south.
Side chapel and aisles have lean-to roofs, and aisles have
transverse arches. Side chapel east window has central shaft.
Transepts have arches towards the nave, and north transept has
smaller arch to side chapel. South transept has to east a
shouldered doorway with a round-arched opening above it, and
to right, a cusped niche with figure on bracket.
FITTINGS include canted octagonal ashlar font, pulpit and
lectern, with plaited relief band. Wooden altar rail, panelled
stalls and desks.
No stained glass or memorials.
