House, now a PH, C15 or early C16 hall-house. In mid C16 floor
inserted, roof raised and large chimney built at lower end of
hall abutting front wall. Narrower and taller 2 storeys early
C18 wing added on N. Modern rear extension under catslide roof.
2 storeys. Timber frame plastered, with high, rendered, brick
plinth. Steep old red tile gabled roof stepping up at N end of
sloping site. Medieval 3 unit plan with 2 storeys cross-wing
and, one step down, the tall single storey hall and service
accommodation. Tiebeam in S gable suggests lower (? kitchen)
building extended further downhill to S. Heavy axial roll
moulded beam put in to carry floor inserted over hall in C16.
Deep C15 billet moulded beam over fireplace, possibly re-used.
Old wall plate exposed internally 2.5 feet below eaves.
Plastered W front of older part of 2 storeys and 3 windows with
high plinth and eaves cornice. Upper windows are wooden
casements with 6 panes in each light. Lower windows are flush
box sashes with 6/6 panes and plain architraves. Projecting
gabled porch with red tile roof and half-glazed door in side up
steps. N wing of 2 storeys and attic. Modillioned cornice and
bellcast eaves to roof. C18 doorcase with heavy frame, moulded
architrave, full entablature with swelled frieze and dentilled
bed mould. 6 panel flush beaded door. 2 storeys canted bay
window with flush box sashes and 4/4:6/6:4/4 panes. Attic window
early C18 of 2 lights with iron opening casement. Attic reached
by rear stair from upper floor of older part. Rear wall of N
wing retains original weatherboarded apron and radial pattern of
pargetting. Interior has exposed timber framing and old plank
doors with iron hinges on 1st floor. Early C18 2-panelled doors
elsewhere. S side wall of former cross-wing exposed as timber
screen between bars on Ground floor.
