West Park Museum

Museum. Built 1897-8. Brick with terracotta dressings and Welsh
slate roof. Single-storeyed, single-roomed structure, with
entrance in pedimented Dutch gabled end wall. Decorative
terracotta panels and frieze. Return walls divided into
shallow panels above plinth, otherwise blind. Cast-iron and
glass verandah runs the length of the building on the right
hand return facing the park. The museum is top-lit by
clerestorey in the roof. INTERIOR: the walls of the single
exhibition hall are enriched by a reconstruction of the frieze
from the Parthenon. The museum was built for the town and
endowed by Miss Marianne Brocklehurst, a local benefactor.
