Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17, C19 extensions. Rubble,
mainly limewashed, probably some cob, slate roof, stone
stacks.
Later alteration has concealed the original plan, but it was
probably 3-room, all heated, with cross-passage to the left
(S); the principal room at this end has been rebuilt, and to
the right (N) is a gabled wing to the front, and extension to
the right, probably later, but a wing to the rear possibly
part of the original range.
In 2 storeys with various casements; the entrance front has a
2-light with transom in a late C19 gablet face dormer, above a
3-light with transom, to the left of a small gabled porch
below a 2-light. To the right is a full-height projecting bay
with canted sides and a small gable, containing a 2-light
above a lofty 2-light with transom; beyond this is a further
2-light and some dove openings, above a 3-light with rough
drip-mould.
A C19 extension, with lower roof-line, projects forward to a
gable end to the right. The gable end to the left is stepped
out to a large square stack, and there are 2 further ridge
stacks. The right return has an entrance in the projecting
wing, and late C19 windows in the extension.
The rear includes a late C19 gabled half-dormer to the right,
and a lean-to opposite the cross passage, with various other
casements. The wing projecting to the rear is in rubble, and
appears to be of early construction.
INTERIOR: the cross passage has a late C19 straight-flight
staircase, and stone floor. To the left, the added or altered
ground-floor room is high ceiled, with a wide elliptical
recess to the wall backing on the passage. The main parlour,
to the right, entered through an C18 panelled door, has a
large open fireplace, backing on the passage, with rebuilt
cheeks, and very deep wood bressumer to hollow chamfer with
run-out stops; this has been opened up since the previous list
was published. The high ceiling has 3 large spine beams, the
outer ones at the walls, with deep chamfers and stops. The
window bay lights the end opposite the fireplace. The kitchen,
through a C17 eight-panel door, has no ceiling beams, but
retains a wide bressumer fireplace with a bread oven; off its
NW corner, beside the fireplace, a door gives to a square
stair well with spiral, in the rear wing. Various good C18 and
C19 plank doors, some with early hinges. The roof was
partially inspected at 2 points, but there was no evidence of
early timbers.
This has been a grand house, which needs full investigation to
determine its building history. It was the former Popham
Manor.
