Terraced houses. Date in plaque to pediment of no. 54, 'New
Terrace 1791'. By James Taylor. Yellow-grey brick set in
Flemish bond, stucco, roof obscured by parapet. Three storeys
over basement, three windows each except no 50, which has two
windows. The terrace forms a symmetrical group with a
pedimented centrepiece (no 54) and the end houses projecting
forward slightly. Basements stuccoed except nos 50 and 57.
Round-arched entrance with gauged brick head, enriched impost
blocks, head on keystone, fluted frieze and cornice (nos 57-58
lack the fluted frieze), fanlight with decorative glazing, and
panelled door. All windows have gauged brick heads.
Ground-floor windows round-arched, first- and second-floor
flat-arched, those to first floor being of piano nobile
proportions; first floor has sill band and iron balconies to
no 54. Sashes of original design, with radiating glazing bars
to ground floor, to all houses except nos 50 (second floor),
53 (first and second floors), 54 (second floor) and 55-57
(first and second floors). Stucco string course at cornice
level to nos 50, 54 and 58, and moulded cornice abve with
pediment to no. 54; simple parapet to intermediate bays.
Stacks on party walls. No 50 has a double-fronted entrance
front in Charlton Place, centre windows blank, segmental
three-storey bays to either side with flat-arched windows
matching those in Duncan Terrace and with sashes of original
design. Cast-iron railings to area.
