II

Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. 1868 by A Lauder of Barnstaple. Snecked stone rubble
with ashlar dressings. Slate roof with crested ridge tiles, coped gable ends and
apex finial at west end. Rectangular on plan. Single storey with galleried west
end. 3-window range to north and south sides with plate tracery to the 2 round-
lobed trefoil-headed lights in pointed arched openings with quatrefoils to the
tympanums. Flanking buttresses, that to easternmost end on north side breaks
around Gothick pointed arched doorway with deeply recessed plank door. Plate
tracery to pointed arched east window incorporating cinquefoil centre encircled by
quatrefoils and roundels in style of rose window with quatrefoils to each side at
the base and trefoiled head, all containing patterned stained glass. West end has
diagonal corner buttresses, the left side incorporating foundation stone, with
blind mouchette traceried gablets to the heads of the offsets flanking 3 grouped
pointed arched openings, the central doorway arch supported on colonnettes with
foliated capitals, the outer openings blind to the springing level with quatrefoils
above to the traceried head. Central plank door of 2 leaves with foliated strap
hinges. Large pointed arched west window above of 5 cinquefoil headed lights with
quatrefoils to the heads of the 2 outer lights and 3 quatrefoils to the rose above
the centre light. The pointed arched hoodmould is returned at the end to continue
round to the splayed corners of the chapel with a short raised parapet at the
south-west corner.
Interior C19 furnishings largely intact including rostrum flanked by organ
galleries and west galleries and west gallery. 4 principal trusses and 2.gable end
trusses with straight principals supported on wall plates pierced with quatrefoil
and arch braces springing from foliated stone corbels with pierced trefoils to the
cusped soffit blades.
