Water mill for grinding gunpowder. Early C19. Built for the Kennal Vale Gunpowder
Works. Dressed granite and granite rubble. Roofless.
Plan: Rectangular plan mill with central cross wheel pit dividing 2 similar.
rectangular plan 2-storey blocks which originally had basements to house the gearing
and millstones in the upper floors. Built into bank at the rear and originally
powered by water from leat parallel to rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys (stone floor over basement). Symmetrical 2 window south-east-
front. Tall central wheelpit opening flanked by 2 identical 1 window fronts. Each
front has small basement opening and large opening above. Doorways into end walls.
Interior not inspected. Possibly there is machinery and millstones.
This mill is the first built of a group of 6 similar mill which survive the beautiful
Kennal Valley.
