Moditonham Park

Dovecot, built as a combination dovecot and folly, formerly in the grounds of
Moditonham House (qv). Circa mid C18. Slatestone and Devon limestone rubble, with
brick dressings; formerly had a slate roof.
Plan: Octagonal tower dovecot, with flanking walls, wall to left partially
demolished. Gothick style.
Exterior: The dovecot is built in the form of a 3-storey octagonal tower, with the
ground level raised at the rear. The front has a round-arched doorway, partially
blocked with a plain door inserted. At first floor there is a central cross loop,
and to left and right a single pointed arched light with brick head. At the rear,
there is the timber lintel surviving from a former door, now below ground level, and
a tall narrow window opening to rear left. Attached to right and left, rubble wall,
the wall remaining to right is about 5 metres long an about 2 metres high, with one
pointed arched window opening with brick head.
Interior: The dovecot is of circular plan internally. At ground floor level the
walls are plastered, with a row of 4 nesting boxes to right and left. At upper
level, the walls are brick-lined, with rows of square pigeon-holes. The rear door
has been blocked in rubble.
This is an unusually designed dovecot, and would have been viewed from Moditonham
House, to the south, with the appearance of a Gothick folly.
