Description

TL 5664 SWAFFHAM PRIOR HIGH STREET
(East Side)

12/168 No 25 Old Barn House

II

House, possibly built as a pair late C17, but altered in C18 and
C19. Clunch rubble, rendered and incised for stone ashlar. The
gable end to the right hand has been rebuilt on several
occasions. The lower courses are of clunch and late C17 red
brick, English bond. Other courses are of early C18
chequerboard pattern of red brick headers and yellow brick
stretchers and the upper courses have mingled brickwork. The
left hand gable end is of clunch but the gable end is of C19
grey gault brick. Steeply pitched plain tile roof with end
parapets on kneelers and two c1880 similar ridge stacks with
recessed panels having red brick trefoil arched heads. Each
house was of lobby entry plan with two rooms at ground floor and
a staircase against the side of the stack. Two storeys and a
cellar. Four recessed hung sashes, mid-late C19 and three at
ground floor. One doorway opposite the right hand stack, the
other is now blocked. The right hand gable has a small original
late C17 window opening, now blocked.
