House, formerly a row of 3 cottages. C18, C19 extension thoroughly modernised when
the cottages were united circa 1980, and collapsed former cottage rebuilt as a
garage circa 1986. Plastered local stone rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with
C20 brick; thatch roof, slate to circa 1986 garage.
Plan: 2-room plan house facing north-north-east, say north, and built down the
hillslope. Uphill the right (west) room has an axial stack backing onto the left
room which has a gable-end stack. These 2 roods were formerly 2 1-room plan
cottages. A collapsed third cottage at the right end has been demolished and
replaced by a garage. A C19 single storey outshot on the left (east) end has now
been brought into domestic use and now serves as a kitchen . The main house is 2
storeys.
Exterior: the main house has an irregular 3-window front of C20 casements with
glazing bars and a roughly central front doorway containing part-glazed C20 door
behind a contemporary gabled porch. The roof is gable-ended.
Interior: has plain carpentry detail and both stone rubble fireplaces have plain
oak lintels. There is, in the back of the axial chimney stack at ground floor
level, a C17 oak fireplace lintel with chamfered Tudor arch soffit. This is
probably introduced but if not suggests that a C17 farmhouse was converted to the
cottages. Roof was not inspected.
Church Terrace is one of a group of attractive traditional thatch-roofed houses in
the vicinity of the Church of St Nicholas (q.v).
