North-eastern barn and attached engine house at Bickerstaffe Hall Farm

GV II

Barn and engine house. Late C18 with mid C19 additions. Brick with roof
of stone slate and slate. South-east wall has wider shippon end at left.
This has a doorway, and a pitching hole to its left. The cart entrance is
protected by a gabled brick canopy. At the right there is a door on the
ground floor with a pitching door above. To the right are taller mid C19
additions. At the left there is a window on both floors. At the right
there is a 1st floor window above a wide gateway with timber lintel. A
wing projecting from the rear has external steps, and a chimney of square
plan, tapering and with panelled sides. Interior: main barn has pegged
king-post trusses , the king-posts braced to the principals and the tie-
beams supported on triangular brick piers. Between the barn and the C19
additions is a segmental archway. Some drive shafts remain in the
additions.
