House, now childrens' home. 1842 for Jonathan Richardson, proprietor of Shotley
Spa; late C19 and c.1903 additions for the Priestman family;dated on right return
bowed projection, below window, with initials JLP and ZNP. Sandstone ashlar,
with Welsh slate roof.
Main house 2 storeys, 3 bays, with set-back 2-storey, 2-bay left extension.
Set-back 2-storey right extensions of one and 3 bays, the latter further set
back with tower between; lower additions in front of each extension.
Main block: giant corner pilasters support entablature with blocking course;
slightly-projecting central bay has 6-panel door and overlight in Tuscan porch
with entablature and blocking course; C20 pent glass roof added on all 3 sides
on glazed side panels. Early C20 bowed projection at left has 3 large windows
with glazing bars and entablature; other windows sashes with fine glazing bars,
flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills; first-floor band. Similar sashes
in 2-bay left and one-bay right extensions, the left with early C20 conservatory
on ground floor under pent roof, the right with one-storey, one-bay addition on
ground floor flush with main front, and with bowed projection on right return;
tower, to right and behind bowed projection, has pedimented second storey
containing paired round-headed windows with impost string and glazing bars; to
right the 3-bay addition has ground-floor central half-glazed door flanked by
large window at left and sash at right, and 3 bowed oriels above with mullioned-
and-transomed windows with glazing bars.
Low-pitched roofs, that on main block with 2 low-segmental-headed dormers on
left and right pitches and one on front, and 4 panelled, corniced central stone
stacks linked by screens. Ridge chimneys on additions. Left return has wooden
loggia.
Interior not inspected. About to be vacated at time of survey.
